Krakatoa never ceases to boggle the mind. The sound ruptured the eardrums of sailors 40 miles away.

The sky is changed—and such a change! Oh night, And storm, and darkness, ye are wondrous strong ... And now again ’tis black,—and now, the glee
Of the loud hills shakes with its mountain-mirth,
As if they did rejoice o’er a young earthquake’s birth. -Lord Byron

"By noon, the light that had remained in the eastern part of the horizon disappeared, and complete darkness had covered the face of day...so profound that I never saw anything equal to it in the darkest night; it was impossible to see your hand when held up close to the eye."

Across the globe, increases in famine, disease, and poverty were recorded in that year. A reminder of how susceptible to catastrophic change our atmosphere can be.

Thousands of miles away in Australia and Mauritius, people going about their business heard what sounded like canons firing. In Java, local folks thought the Devil was coming with his troops. As recently as 2011, significant seismic activity was detected as Tambora smoked.

One small benefit, despite the tragic consequences of Tambora, were the spectacular sunsets. They were captured by the painter JMW Turner

In Massachusetts and New York, they had snow in June and July. People in Virginia huddled at the fireside in August. The continent was covered with a veil of reddish fog that would not disperse in the rain.

The global darkness caused by Tambora is credited with creating the spooky atmospheres that inspired Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and ghost poems of Lord Byron and the Romantics.

On the other side of the world, in Virginia, Thomas Jefferson lost his harvest for the year to the effects of Tambora, and needed to apply for a 1000 dollar farm loan.

But, get this, in 1816, Tambora erupted with a Volcanic Explosivity index of 7 (Super Colossal), spewing more than 23 cubic miles of material into the atmosphere. Crops failed worldwide and it was known as "the year without a summer".

That amount of material cooled the global temperature and darkened the sky worldwide for around 5 years.

It had the force of 200 megatons of tnt, 10,000 times more explosive than the bomb at Hiroshima. The volcano pumped more than 11.5 cubic miles (miles!) of debris into the atmosphere.
