There is no way this whole thing isn’t going to implode and make everyone involved look like idiots. The entire idea of cryptoart alone is a disaster. It won’t make money for much longer and the environmental consequences caused by this will just all be in vain anyway.

This was honestly my first thought when I learned about this concept... like... what’s preventing randos from taking someone else’s art and turning it into an NFT? Nothing? Cool.

Except creating a PGP entry doesn't cost substantial amounts of real world money

That was my immediate concern when i heard about this! How are we even supposed to prevent people from just taking our art and doing this? Nothing is in place to prevent this!

This is a problem with a specific platform (Rarible) allowing art theft. It's no different to the hundreds of websites that already do allow it. If you buy from a fraudster, it's because you didn't check who you were buying from. Sadly this happens all the time, NFT or not.

NFTs allow an artist to have a public wallet that is associated with all of your artworks, like having a digital gallery on a public blockchain. I can also just steal someone's art and make a certificate of authenticity - i that doesn't make it legitimate, it's called fraud!

To be honest, I was always more fascinated by art of art forgery than by the art itself.
