Someone should've looked at that list of journalists covering 2020 campaign and said hmmmm how are we going to adequately cover the campaign where RACE IS A HUGE ISSUE with no Black people?

Surely the ones that ask such a question aren’t invited to the party anymore!
-
No that’s the worst of it. When we do start asking that question, well-meaning fellow white people look around and go, “Huh. Good point.” They often can’t hear it from people of color, but one of us speaks up and they think about it, and sometimes act. More of us gotta speak up.

Fear of competition is probably a big part.
-
For some of them, I'm sure -- bet I bet for a majority who don't speak up it's fear of shunning. (Especially those who have been raised in a church where that was common.) Fear of having all your friends in your industry stop talking to you is a huge barrier for some.

A lot of the time we’re just oblivious. Once we start seeing it, we continue. There’s no reclosing the eyes. But frequently it takes a white person to open em for other whites. “Have you noticed everyone in this room is white?” As gentle an observation as that can get us started.
