Looks like a row pitch issue?

Yep, ultimately caused by a bug in the big-endian-writing one-liner that encoded width 512 as 0x0202 :-)

(Quick'n'dirty DDS->PKM conversion.)

At Unity they just wired up the entire library deeply into their pipeline, right in Unity itself. Makes sense that at Facebook you make it a service!
-
Yeah. Partly so that other teams might benefit, but I'm also finding it surprisingly pleasant to break out logically distinct subcomponents, all the way to standalone networked services.

The goal of the system is to ingest full-fidelity models, then generate variant URLs of the model on demand, parameterised by e.g. texture format support, size constraints, and so on. We're assembling a toolbox for mesh optimisation and compression, texture compression, etc.
-
As texture compression can be a very expensive operation, if you make it a service then you can leverage all the tools you have to distribute that work. And you can keep optimizing the service over time and the entire org benefits. I think it's a great idea.
