Real talk: for those that couldn't afford to go to school or otherwise have a legitimate reason they aren't enrolled...are there such things as apprenticeships in the tech world? Why must one be "a recent graduate" in order to be given a chance to get a job?

I don't have links, but at least in London, Dublin and (I believe) Zürich, Google SRE is offering apprenticeships. I don't know about the US. Also, though, in many cases, "Graduate degree" is a preferred qualification, not a requirement. Case in point: they hired me, no degree.

For sure. Most of mentors at Google don't have degrees. I still want the same opportunity be given for entry level candidates that show the willingness to learn without requiring they be in school.

The wizard/apprentice relationship was definitely a thing when I got started in UNIX, servers, networking. Why it seems to have disappeared I don’t quite understand and I want to bring it back.

A large percentage of the best coders I've worked with learned this way, and nearly all of the best SREs.
