To be clear, I like the idea of continuing to publish. But one of the first things I heard from another academic when I got my current job was that “You can use your PTO for research trips!” There wasn’t even a segue: it was immediately back to how I can give more to academia. 2/

More scholarly production doesn’t save contingent scholars from adjunctopia, so we need a reason beyond that, and academic research cannot solely be a hobby sustained by an individual, because frankly, it’s shitty on those terms. Scholarly societies need to figure this out. 3/

All of this is on my mind because I’m supposed to be speaking at a career diversity panel in a few days, and I’m finding it hard to articulate what can really be done. I have lots of ideas about how orgs can stop actively obstructing their own members, but beyond that... 4/
