    Bollards need to be able to cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to vehicles.

    Oversized vehicles parked on flexible bollards.
    Just a reminder that flexible bollards are pointless. Five vehicles in a row that parked *on* them, all giant trucks/SUVs.

    It'd be great to know how this works (or not!) on Windows especially (since nobody at has a Windows machine...) but any willing beta testing would be appreciated before we actually archive the real thing!

    Anyone want to beta test our first data release and its reproducibility? Requires downloading 10GB of data, having conda installed, and running something CPU intensive for a few hours. It's posted in our sandbox:

    It seems like what's changed is public opinion, not the GOP position. The context that they have to operate within is different, which means their tactics need to be different, but the only fundamental change has happened in the public's mind, not the party.

    But all in all, it seems like a *relatively* minor risk, compared to others associated with oil and gas production, climate impacts of fossil fuel use, mercury and particulate pollution from burning coal... etc.

    This is why I am bothered by fearmongering reports of "thousands" of fracking related earthquakes. Like okay there are thousands of detected events, but seismometers are *really* sensitive. You will not feel, much less be put at risk by, a magnitude 3.0 quake.

    Great thread - thanks for sharing. Here is a graphic that I like to use that shows the increase in ground shaking with increasing magnitude. These are M4.2, 5.2, and 6.2 earthquakes (at the same location and depth) that were recorded at the same station.

    A good thread on how making steel can be adapted to very low carbon processes. Good engineering insights from many folks.

    Can anyone point me to how these new CO2-free steel processes get carbon into the iron ore to make steel w/o coking coal, or are they mostly recycling of old steel? Honest Q.

    Shocked, I tell you. Shocked.

    Cops can ask Ring to save any footage they want, meaning it doesn't get deleted under Ring's cloud storage plan, while they get a warrant/subpoena Ring videos aren't exactly "yours." Cops are always a step away from getting whatever they want.

    Sometimes I call this kind of strategy "Paying the climate ransom." And sometimes it seems worthwhile, especially if you take the political economy of these industries into account. It may not be fair & just, but it's an expedient way around existing architectures of constraint.

    So again, we are going to need financial tools and policies to wipe out that fossil infrastructure quickly. Should we securitize the old blast furnaces and steel mills with low-interest public debt, and recycle the capital into new zero-carbon industrial infrastructure?

    And as with coal plants, gas pipelines, etc. sunk capital stands in the way: "But even if [we] can get hydrogen-based steel to work at a larger scale and lower cost [...] face an uphill battle to transform the steel industry, as existing blast furnaces will need to be replaced."

    Seems like electrolytic hydrogen production for direct reduction of iron ore would be a *great* candidate for soaking up excess midday solar or overnight wind production at high renewable penetrations.
