our sales teams and editorial/content teams are strictly divided. branded content is rarely handled by folks on the core editorial team, and we rarely ever know who the clients or what ads will run alongside our features/reviews/etc.

Shouldn't they talk to each other though? For instance if you are taking payments for advertising a game from a publisher, and then in the same breath the editorial team is writing puff/takedown pieces about them, or reviewing their game? Can you see how that can be perceived?

yeah, i can see the point your making here, but no one is ever writing a positive review, or preview for game thinking about who’s ad dollars might be attached to it. we’ve 100% written negative reviews and opinion pieces on games/media that also buys ads.
