Final Fantasy XV is one of the weirdest AAA games i’ve ever played. the combat is totally bizarre, the story makes no sense, there are huge portions of the game obviously missing (even early on) but i’m... sorta into it? it’s so charming and gorgeous, i wanna see it through.pic.twitter.com/gg1VFUqQrp

Here's a guiding principal for that game, and something that the DLC expansions broke somewhat: it is locked to the perspective of a completely sheltered protagonist who also has no god damn idea what's going on until the very end.

That flies in the face of what's considered a model for good storytelling. Noctis *should* be an ideal POV character who has things explained to him and therefore the player. Instead, everything's related to him like it was a real crisis: relevant info is always at a premium.

I wouldn't say that makes it good, and many would argue that it makes it bad. Personally, I found it riveting.

It's one of the things that makes it so distinctive. It's also a trademark of almost everything Hajima Tabata directs. Crisis Core, 3rd Birthday, FF Type-0, FF15; the guy has a penchant for locking the player into a very limited POV where they're at the mercy of circumstance.
