9. RESIDENT EVIL 2
Capcom redefined the remake (again) with RE2. beautiful, challenging, and terrifying, this game managed to fill me with the same sense of dread i felt back in 1998. also, so many good Mr. X memes.

8. A PLAGUE TALE: INNOCENCE
a wholly unique and genuinely moving story, anchored by a handful of fantastic performances. i missed this game when it was released but, thanks to heaps of praise, decided to check it out and it is absolutely fantastic.

6. BLOODSTAINED
basically the second coming of Symphony of the Night, this is all the best parts of Castlevania with a 2019 paint job and i am here for it. awesome bosses, hundreds of secrets, and way more content than you’d expect. great, great, great.

5. LUIGI’S MANSION 3
combining the greatest parts of the first two games, and adding more bosses, more areas, more collectibles, and somehow more charm than ever, Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the series at its best. plus, it opens with Toad driving a bus. C’MON!

4. DRAGON QUEST XI S**
a stunning, sprawling JRPG that’s every bit as tropey as it is original. DQXI is nearly episodic in its storytelling, but so cohesive and downright hilarious. at 30+ hours in, i have so much left to play and i can’t wait to see more of it.

3. SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE
From Software does it again with their most nuanced combat and storytelling yet. frustratingly tough and overwhelmingly rewarding, this game is another masterpiece from an unbelievably talented team.

2. FIRE EMBLEM: THREE HOUSES
a game that i swore i wasn’t interested in, that i then proceeded to sink 100+ hours into. deep on both the strategy AND relationship building aspects, multiple story paths, and an unforgettable cast, i loved every minute of this game.

1. THE OUTER WORLDS
what. a. banger.
the space-western i’ve been dreaming of for at least a decade. impeccable writing, an amazing cast, and gorgeous art direction, this game takes a bit from my favorite franchises to make something fresh and exciting. an instant classic.
