TAKE 1: it’s crazy that from the very first encounter, it’s easy to see this game is essentially a blueprint for SO MANY action games that came after it. first two things i noticed though: the right stick does NOT function the way you want it to and there’s no crouch button.

man, this game really starts ramping up once you get to the castle. suddenly i have zero ammo or recovery items and it is a SCRAMBLE.

that being said, i do wish that when games get remasters like this, they’d include some quality of like improvements. RE4 DESPERATELY needs the ability to map guns/items to the d-pad or something. weapon swapping is a pain in the ass. also, no subtitles?!

RE4 is still super fun to play, and the power curve genuinely feels great. yes, there are things that feel a little clunky (cutscenes last a few seconds too long, movement is occasionally a hinderance) and some boss fights are just plain bad, but it’s still a remarkable game.

i’m really close to the end now, and it’s wild how this game has had a grip on me over the last week. i keep thinking about playing it, despite having done so at least a dozen times.

So how do you get someone who is terrified of jump scares and can’t hang for horror games? What’s the appeal for someone like me to get interested enough to play it and last through the anxiety attacks?

appeal is a tough! part of RE4’s appeal for me is the fact that it’s so stressful and puts me on edge. if that’s not your deal, totally pass on it. but, it is widely considered one of the greatest games of all time so if you have an opportunity to test it out, give it a shot!
