And most of them end. So new communes should be able to see this coming,.

Most kibbutzim are secular. And, none of them are nearly as communal as when they started!

I don't think it's that complicated. Secular socialist groups don't tend to have a top guru type. I'm sure they doesn't eliminate the potential for abuse, but having a single charismatic dude in charge of everything is, let's say, a bit risky!

At least among the kibbutzim, that seems pretty uncommon. Might be harder to pull off if you start small and secular. In fact, one *problem* they had was a lack of quick leadership decisions.

I had the same question, and asked

-
So far exclusively male.

Hmm.

From the perspective of sexual selection theory, many men become cult leaders as a mating strategy. Totally unsurprising that they 'abuse power to get sex'. That's the whole point of getting power. Immoral? Yes. Expected given biology? Also yes.

Except the Shakers! Not the Shakers.
-
Yes, the Shakers had sort of the opposite problem.
-
Yes, making it an interesting point. Lovely furniture, catchy dances, but they overlooked the need to make little Shakers.
-
I remember reading about the last two Shakers, a couple of sweet old ladies... expect they are gone now...
-
I stand corrected - there are still two surviving Shakers, they still have a commune site and even have a website: https://www.maineshakers.com/
-
That is somehow comforting to know. We need all the peaceful people we can get in these turbulent times. Thank you.
