I'm reading on the history of religious communes, and I swear something like 3/4 end because the spiritual leader is abusing his power for sex.

And most of them end. So new communes should be able to see this coming,.

Most kibbutzim are secular. And, none of them are nearly as communal as when they started!

I don't think it's that complicated. Secular socialist groups don't tend to have a top guru type. I'm sure they doesn't eliminate the potential for abuse, but having a single charismatic dude in charge of everything is, let's say, a bit risky!

At least among the kibbutzim, that seems pretty uncommon. Might be harder to pull off if you start small and secular. In fact, one *problem* they had was a lack of quick leadership decisions.

And in the other 1/4, it happened but didn't end the commune.

There was at least one case where their were two leaders in a row for the same commune. I think it was one of the Zen ones...

It explains all the robes. Out of curiosity, are the spiritual leaders usually men (either in general or the communities that fail due to abuse of power) or are there women as well?

        So far exclusively male.

From the perspective of sexual selection theory, many men become cult leaders as a mating strategy. Totally unsurprising that they 'abuse power to get sex'. That's the whole point of getting power. Immoral? Yes. Expected given biology? Also yes.

Yes, making it an interesting point. Lovely furniture, catchy dances, but they overlooked the need to make little Shakers.

I stand corrected - there are still two surviving Shakers, they still have a commune site and even have a website: https://www.maineshakers.com/

That is somehow comforting to know. We need all the peaceful people we can get in these turbulent times. Thank you.
