Who enters the BTNY main office cannot avoid stopping by Pam Mow´s office, the Department Head Assistant. Sometimes just to say Hi and receive a cheerful smile or because we know Pam will solve any problem we may have! We´ll miss you, Pam! Happy retirement!

I am disappointed that vegan activist and Oxford scientist Dr. Springmann suggested a meat tax based on a meager meat to cancer relative risks (RR) of 1.14. A RR of less than 2 does not prove causality. Scandalous for a journal publishing such work and for media to broadcast it.

Dear fellow scientists: if you want non-scientists to understand, believe, or fund us, consider changing your attitudes toward scientists who do outreach. Science communication is not a waste of time, it's not for self-promotion, and it's not a hobby. It's a responsibility.

Maize is an artificial species created entirely thanks to human ingenuity (right). Its closest wild relative is a grass with tiny, barely edible, rock hard, seeds called Teosinthe (left). It took thousands of years of tireless breeding work by Native Americans to get us maize.

This is a story that can't be told often enough. Vaccines work. They have saved hundreds of millions of lives, and prevented hundreds of millions of parents the pain of burying a child. Up there with fire and the wheel among greatest inventions ever.

That $35 that scientific journals charge you to read a paper goes 100% to the publisher, 0% to the authors. If you just email us to ask for our papers, we are allowed to send them to you for free, and we will be genuinely delighted to do so.

Great new study about science outreach via Twitter: Initially, scientists mostly tweet to each other. But after accumulating about 1000 followers, scientists reach an increasing number of journalists, policy makers, and other members of the public.

climate change needs to be untethered from politics for people to think clearly about it, as most do for other non-politicized scientific issues, you know, like GMOs, evolution, vaccines, nuclear power...
