The Enos and Carnes paper on this is terrific. What looks like "Racial" resentment is actually not anti-black. Comparable levels of RR exist among conservtives regarding many (all?) other groups. Are libs anti-white? By same std, not histrionic claim.pic.twitter.com/qba87hOxa6

Damning indictment of "Trump Studies" all racism all the time emphasis. Like so much of social psych, may not be "completely false" but wildly overblown and systematically misses other, larger patterns -- in this case, the changes on the left.

Yes, my cautious summary of what is going on here is not that there was a big increase in bigotry among GOP but that there was a sorting of bigots into GOP and a shift left - but much of that leftward shift, I think, happened during and after election.

Hey Ryan, guessed I missed this. Your interpretation seems reasonable. But can you clarify why the sorting into GOP wouldn’t coincide with group level increases in prejudice? Or perhaps it did among primary—but not GE—voters?

It's a valid point, if sorting is going on, we should see an increase - although a general point is that we don't actually know how to effectively measure intergroup attitudes, so it could all get lost in measurement error.

So, what you're effectively saying is that any narrative that attributes Trump's victory to increases in racism = [a dishonest] overinterpretation of the data?

No, not saying that. I don't know of claims about increasing racism leading to Trump victory. I do, however, find the evidence that Trump voting was correlated with inegalitarian racial attitudes to be persuasive - partially because it's been shown with many different measures.

That's interesting. Because the ANES data shows that general anti-egalitarianism actually significantly decreased from Romney to Trump voterspic.twitter.com/3RkPbOTXo4

Nor is there any increase in opposition to affirmative action/government assistance to blacks (according to the ANES data). In fact, just the opposite.pic.twitter.com/UaieH14rEZ

Zach, I feel like this isn't going to be sorted out over twitter, so why don't you email me. But to start, see Sides, Tesler, and Vavreck and look at the strong correlations between various measure of racial attitudes and Trump voting. Lots of evidence pointing same direction.

But those correlations are likely inflated by the Dems moving HARD to the Left.....no?
