Here it is! Everything I drew, doodled, sketched, and messed-up in my sketchbook for . Thanks for all the encouragement this month, it's been a big creative confidence boost! And thanks to for the weird and wonderful prompts!

Operation Morning Light: In 1977, the US noticed that Kosmos 954 (a Soviet Union satellite) wasn't looking so hot. In fact, it looked like it was going to de-orbit & land in N America. The Soviet Union wasn't very forthcoming w/info about the satellite's impending demise, 1/n

I say “Bah!” to you, ! Would love to attend, but I’ll be in London during your Houston event, and in Houston during your London event! I must therefore conclude that the time/location of exists in a superposition, which collapses once I book my travel.

Interested in doing a planetary science PhD about space, rocks, and space rocks, in this amazing building? Then have a look at our projects that have just gone up!

Mercury's south pole needs a geological map. If you want a PhD and think you can match the quality of 's map of the Hokusai quadrangle while doing science as well you have just over five weeks left to apply

Re-sketching some relative dating cartoons today. Students, want to test yourself? 3) Which diagram shows an unconformity that occurred before an episode of folding?

So, all this to say, I’d love to see Betelgeuse go supernova, but Halley’s Comet is a reminder of how short a human lifetime next to astronomical events. Space is big. Light is slow. Comets are slower. Time is long. Stars burn long. Humans burn short. 10/10

I was less than 4 months old when Halley’s Comet last passed, and I’ll be 75 if I live to see it pass again. Even the person it’s named after only got to see it once. 9/n

Right now, Halley’s Comet is about as far from the Earth as it ever gets, about the distance to Pluto. It will next pass through the inner solar system, and be clearly visible from Earth in 2061. 8/n

It next passed in 1986, and for the first time photographs of Halley’s Comet were taken by robotic spacecraft. Which were themselves orbiting around the Sun. 7/n

Halley’s Comet completed 3 more orbits before being photographed for the first time as it passed near the Earth in 1910. 6/n

When it went through the inner solar system in 1682, it was observed by an astronomer who predicted that it would return in 1758. In 1758 it appeared in the skies again, and was named after the astronomer who had predicted correctly. Halley’s Comet. 5/n

That comet made another 4 trips around the sun, each orbit taking between 75 and 78 Earth years, and each time observed by astronomers (and many other people) on Earth. 4/n

On Earth, in 1378 a particular comet was seen in the night sky (not for the first time), and recorded by astronomers around the world (also not for the first time), as it made its closest approach in its orbit around the sun (definitely not for the first time). 3/n

Updates are dated 1378. Betelgeuse is 642 light years away, which means means we’re seeing what happened there 642 years ago. In 1378. 2/n

Ok, this account is fantastic for a few reasons. 1. Informative breaking news. 2. Who wouldn’t want to see a supernova?! 3. In the correct past tense for the year 1378. And the date is the best part... 1/n
