    in 1881 English ornithologist & bird artist John Gould died. He published a number of monographs on birds, illustrated by plates that he produced with the assistance of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, & several other artists.

    This we are again celebrating artist Joseph Wolf's bicentenary, this time with some of his cats lithographed by Joseph Smit in Daniel Giraud Elliot's magnificent 'A monograph of the Felidae, or family of the cats', 1883.

    to Brian Houghton Hodgson who was born in 1800. Hodgson is widely recognised for the progress he made in describing the birds and mammals of Nepal, and ZSL is fortunate to have six of his manuscript volumes. Find out more:

    Brian Houghton Hodgson was born in 1801 or possibly 1800 as there seems to be uncertainty about the date! He described & of Nepal & some were named after him. In we hold his manuscript notes with illustrations:

    Priscilla Wakefield née Bell was born in 1751. She campaigned for women to be educated & to gain knowledge of science. 'An introduction to the natural history and classification of insects...', 1816, is in the form of letters from ‘Felicia’ in the ‘shrubbery’.

    Born in 1708 Georg Dionysius Ehret. He provided watercolours to Mark Catesby who then etched them for his book 'The natural history of Carolina, Florida & the Bahama Islands,...' publ. 1731-43. More on Catesby in our blog:

    So sorry to hear about . I met him about 20 years ago as he visited to see our collections of Edward Lear, including some original drawings of animals. He was a lifelong fan of Edward Lear & celebrated Lear in this film:

    Ann has chosen another favourite Joseph Wolf , this is her favourite depicting , last week she chose her favourite painting of birds. Wolf used the famous ZSL elephants & Alice as models for these African at a water hole.
