I think it's very important to note that it was specifically /pol/ that started the troll op for that. /pol/ is nothing like the rest of the 4chan, besides maybe /b/. It's a containment board meant to literally section off all the unwanted edgelords, racists, and so on.

When someone in another board on 4chan starts spouting out hate speech or being edgy with politics, they'll always get either banned by a mod, or told to fuck off to /pol/. That said, it was a meme. The idea was to trick the news into believing it, and /pol/ succeeded.
