The secretarybird of sub-Saharan Africa gets its name from its crest, which resembles the quill pens that office workers of yesteryear tucked behind their ears. The bird prefers walking over flying, and may even travel 20 miles per day!

Not only is the oilbird one of only a few bird species that use echolocation, but it is also the world's only flying, nocturnal, fructivorous bird! Oilbirds feed their young fruits that are rich in oils and fats, which makes them very large and heavy.

Many bird species can see UV light. With the exception of night-flying birds, their eyes probably are even more sensitive to ultraviolet light than visible light. Scientists also have learned that many birds have plumage that reflects UV light. Read more:https://bit.ly/36x8jtr

The long-term impact of Australia's bushfires is not yet clear, but is expected to be devastating to many of the country's native species, beyond just the birds. Consider donating to trusted organizations, such as

The eastern part of Hokkaido is lush with majestic scenery. While the cultivated plains mostly consist of fields and farms, there still remains a stretch of wilderness that forms one of Japan’s foremost birdwatching areas: https://bit.ly/2R1hHQs pic.twitter.com/ygwuFeRy2O

South America's largest woodpecker is the Magellanic woodpecker. Besides its diet of grubs, beetles, spiders, sap, and fruit, this impressive bird will also sometimes eat small reptiles, songbird eggs and nestlings, and even bats!
