What better way to reflect the District’s values and our unwavering commitment to educational equity than doubling down on our support for our most vulnerable students in the next budget? Read about my three budget recommendations:

  6. Challenge accepted! Although, I'm at a bit of a disadvantage to win (wait, is there a winner? I mean, besides the planet?!) because I'm currently traveling to LA. I figure commuting around the City of Angels doesn't count. I'll track my progress Monday and Tuesday when back!

  7. I've compiled notes on Ward 5 school building usage, needed facilities and updates, outdated requests, delayed/partial modernizations, etc. I believe several of my colleagues have done the same. This move could be a move in the right direction — for our students and the city.

  8. At the State Board's Performance Oversight Hearing yesterday, asked if the Board could potentially help the District develop its Master Facilities Plan. Definitely something the Board could help with; would make the process more public and democratic.

  9. It was quite impressive to sit in on a second grade reading lesson in Mandarin. Due to travel, I will sadly miss Yu Ying’s Year of the Rat celebration this Friday — based on today’s observations, I have a feeling attendees are in for a treat!

  10. Head of School Alexander said that a mark of a great school is whether the adults in that school would/do enroll their kids. A growing number of teachers have enrolled their own children; and to boost teacher retention (a State Board focus) subsidized childcare is provided.

  11. Another great visit today, this time at ! The Year of the Rat is in full swing, and students’ artistic skills were on full display around the school. Thanks, Marquita Alexander, for sharing with me what makes Yu Ying special.

  16. A quality school + neighborhood recreational center + mental health clinics. Much more impactful than a vacant building ever could be. Progress.

  17. The question I hope gets answered at the upcoming DCPS oversight hearing is, what targeted supports did Wash Met receive ahead of November 2019? Why couldn’t the targeted supports the Chancellor speaks about in this letter be offered ahead of this closure? The onus is on DCPS.

  18. With Washington Met closing, it is up to & to leverage their authority of oversight to get to the bottom of this. should articulate a formal process for school closures (& supports provided ahead of time), so this doesn’t happen again.

  19. I saw firsthand how tough traffic is around the school, along Riggs NE and Rock Creek Church RD NE. It took 10+ minutes to get through this jam. DCB has repeatedly asked for a stop light to ease traffic and ensure students can enter and cross safely. CC:

  20. I fully support DCB’s growth project to ensure more students have access to this quality school. Currently, about 450 students attend. Although the school has 2100 students on its waitlist, they are only able to admit a “handful” of students each year. CC:

  21. Not only does have the highest numbers of “at-risk” students out of bilingual charters, but they are seeing gains: 29% of DCB “at-risk” students scored 4+ in ELA and math compared to citywide averages of 21% and 16%, respectively. Yet, they are still pushing!
