    8 year old boy who died Christmas Eve in Border Patrol custody held with dad in the field for 3 hours. Then 2 days at a BP processing station. Then 2 days at another station. Then moved at 11:17PM to a third station. That’s when CBP says he got sick.

    I am still chuckling. I will all day long. I know his retribution will be swift and terrible, but no Christmas gift could be greater than this: seeing my Dad, despite his efforts to avoid it, unwittingly eat a raw sprout. Merry Christmas, one and all.

    Very few youth are ready to 100% meet their own financial needs at 18 especially in the expensive transition period from high school to college or working life. Why do we expect this of fostered youth?

    Well experienced foster parent here. Education is indeed an important factor in getting out of poverty. However, for foster kids aging out I suspect that untreated childhood trauma is the biggest cause of homelessness. Lack of mental health care for kids is a huge problem.

    I was in foster care three times and was also a provider. And I was really poor growing up. I had no idea if the homes where I was fostered were poor or not. They were less poor than I was. They all believed that a good education was the way out of poverty. As do I.

    The wealth of foster parents has very little do with foster children being aged out of the system at age 18 and the idea that the wealthy middle class has a monopoly on giving love & care, is really dubious at best.

    A few solutions...require higher wealth threshold via income, earnings and assets of foster parents, same with mentors - and move front money into the back end for timing of college education including vocational for after HS with grants for business startup, housing, etc.
