THREAD/ Today we release the results of our latest Conservative members poll. One of the key findings is the dramatic extent to which Brexit has reshaped members' political priorities and subverted traditional loyalties

For example, 51% of Conservative party members say they have more in common with supporters from other parties that think the same way on Brexit than they do with fellow Conservatives who take a differing Brexit view https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/most-conservative-members-would-see-party-destroye?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_mindset …pic.twitter.com/7GDge4Rddl

Which leads to a situation that would once be thought unimaginable. Almost half (46%) of Tory members would be happy to see Nigel Farage - the leader of a rival party - take over the their leadership of their own party https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/most-conservative-members-would-see-party-destroye?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_mindset …pic.twitter.com/yYH0XAFYqJ

So committed to Brexit are members of the Conservative and Unionist Party that they would be willing to see Scotland (63%) and Northern Ireland (59%) leave the UK in order to secure it. https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/most-conservative-members-would-see-party-destroye?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_mindset …pic.twitter.com/4j7bCPg6aK

54% of Tory members would also be willing to see their own party destroyed if it meant securing Brexit. The only thing members would be willing to give up Brexit for is to keep Jeremy Corbyn out of Number 10 (51%) https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/most-conservative-members-would-see-party-destroye?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_mindset …pic.twitter.com/c6rnG930H5

Tory members aren't just ideologically committed to Brexit. They believe that failing to deliver Brexit will put their party out of power for good, and that delivering it (even a no-deal version) will win them at least the next election https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/most-conservative-members-would-see-party-destroye?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_mindset …pic.twitter.com/ubPaANsXmF

Brexit has also reshaped the two-party system in the eyes of Tory members. Fully two thirds (67%) see the Brexit Party as a big threat to them, almost double the number who say the same of Labour (34%) https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/most-conservative-members-would-see-party-destroye?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_mindset …pic.twitter.com/eIv9o1aelF

Turning now to what party members want from candidates, it is clear that Brexit trumps domestic policy. While 53% would back someone with a good Brexit plan but a bad vision for the country, just 15% would back a good domestic agenda but bad Brexit plan https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/tory-leadership-brexit-plan-trumps-domestic-policy?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_policy …pic.twitter.com/TYUyATnz7j

While Esther McVey had pledged to banish Remainers from cabinet, what matters to party members is not the 2016 vote but that a candidate is willing to back a no-deal Brexit. Only 26-29% could get behind someone who took no-deal off the table https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/tory-leadership-brexit-plan-trumps-domestic-policy?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_policy …pic.twitter.com/9S9rAwpX18

The candidates have been clamouring for the One Nation candidate label, but it's not clear why - only 30% of members say they are from that tradition. In fact, the majority of members (56%) describe themselves as Thatcherites https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/four-more-discoveries-our-conservative-member-surv?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_more_things …pic.twitter.com/teEeK7ncqb

After Churchill (95%) and Thatcher (93%), our poll finds Hague (68%) and Duncan Smith (61%) are the most well respected post-war Conservative leaders among party members. Cameron is fifth on 52%, May ninth on 41% https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/four-more-discoveries-our-conservative-member-surv?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_more_things …pic.twitter.com/KTLHesWmIs

Finally, we look at how current members might have voted in 2016 in retrospect. Asked to vote based on how they felt at the time, May beats Leadsom by 47% to 39%, but then asked to vote based on what they know now Leadsom wins by 54% to 30% https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/06/18/four-more-discoveries-our-conservative-member-surv?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=website_article&utm_campaign=conservative_members_june_2019_more_things …pic.twitter.com/CtyIM56bI2

So these mad Brexiters favour Churchill - founder of a united Europe - and Thatcher - who fought to keep us in and was opposed to referendums. These people are seriously insane.

Odd that Tories think two losers (in actual Elections) are due more respect as leaders than a bloke that became their 1st PM in years AND won an increased majority! Oh and other real election winning PMs like John Major and Ted Heath

IDS and Hague have both had good post leaderships. IDS's work on social justice & welfare reform has gone down well with members, Hague had good period as elder statesman Foreign Secretary. Neither's turned into an embittered former leader still fighting battles of decades past.
