  16. Law en­force­ment is why we have gov­ernment in the first place. In a Hobbe­sian state of na­ture, the guy with the big­gest club kills you, takes your stuff & makes your fam­ily slaves. Law en­force­ment was the first gov­ern­ment func­tion, and it re­mains the most im­por­tant

  17. Police and the com­mu­nity aren’t on op­po­site sides, but on the same side—against vi­o­lence & crime but for peace, dig­nity & the rule of law. The iden­tity of the crim­i­nal is ir­rel­e­vant, whether a cor­po­rate ex­ec­u­tive or gang­ster, po­lice of­fi­ce or dope dealer.

  18. Of course they do. What we’re seeing this week is an argument for having *many* sources of energy and resilience in the grid. What it is not: proof that one energy source is inherently and always “best.” Everybody, please check your confirmation bias.

  19. For decades, the Fed’s job was to preserve the dollar as a store of value against inflation. Under Clinton, it was urged to add full employment—a second mission. Biden is now jettisoning inflation in favor of employment. We will regret the profligacy.
