Sometimes it is possible to keep large parts of the ugliness local. Its hard to find rules in software that are truly general.
"Efficient & elegant" is a con. Code has to get ugly when resources are scarce. Everything in life gets ugly when resources are scarce.

But efficiency is not to use scarce resources, rather it is using plenty of resources in a way they not become scarce.
