Code & data are the same the way animals & minerals are the same. Code in sexprs is like animals in boxes, not a huge advance in zoology.

I meant physical boxes, the way code can be physically in sexprs (look, data!) but this does nothing for an optimizing compiler.

Compilers do just that. Meta programming is a thing. It's not about physical or not.

By putting code in boxes (Lisp machine) we could avoid virtual memory and "Unix atrocities" like implicit env inheritance.

True but not due to sexprs. My point is, the hard work is IR semantics & compiler algos, not syntax. Studying animals, not boxing.
