I disagree. When I take up a task I'm motivated to do a good job, because I want a good result, not because I want to win.
Without competition, people aren't inclined to cheat. Unfortunately, they aren't inclined to do a good job, either.

I too like doing a good job - according to my definition of "good", at my pace and with no budget limits. Not society's "good"
