One problem here is that we're all assholes to some degree (same with talented), making it harder to define the firing threshold

agreed, but I can recall more than one case where every IC agreed, but management was in love with the jerk's potential.

After the non-jerks leave, management is left with a jerk with potential but not productivity. Seems like a bad trade.
