A similar postulate was put forward by Kaczynski, et al, who also generalized it for all problem-solving. His solution was shown to scale poorly when the FBI tracked him down, so it remains an open problem.
"They don't control their code, their code controls them," I've heard someone say derisively, and it was unfair, because it's true of everyone. Your code works. You don't know why because there's lots of it. You can't possibly make a big change to it. How does it not control you?
