So-called "zero-sum games" are actually negative-sum, since playing them by itself costs resources. This is one reason why productivity can actually shrink as the group grows in size - N people can play O(N^2) negative-sum games against each other
This problem is solved by bankruptcy and the emergence of new organizations, in the same way that the inability of a body to maintain its health forever is solved by death and the birth of new organisms
