I’ve known a few people who managed to achieve that status. All of them where very good in leaving projects at the sweet spot where their solution for the problem seems great and almost done and prior to all the grave problems it causes.
It works in ocean-sized organizations where you can ride the waves of trends, leaving a trail of shit under the surface. In pond-sized orgs, you are much more likely to eventually swim into your own shit, and often it's actually the effective shit-cleaner who gets the recognition

Cleaner is actually a mantle I wear often in new customer projects and yes, there is recognition to be had. It also reminds me every time of an old blog post you wrote about programmer jokes.
