People like to imagine that software is like paving a road, where you can track progress by the mile. It’s more like underwater welding in a sewer; Every time someone jumps in, it stirs up the solids on the bottom and visibility drops to zero.
Hard things are easy, and easy things are hard. OS kernels are easier than web front-ends. Movie scripts get botched more often than special effects. Why? Because hard things are left to professionals out of necessity, while "easy" things become a magnet for incompetent meddlers.
