Community-managed code is better because they can reject commits. Your company has a deadline? Tough - your patch still sucks. Fork the code or whatever, we don't give a shit. Can't do it in a proprietary setting.

Is that (propriety lesser quality than OSS) empirically proven? My experience is different, and I can think of a few examples where it's wrong (e.g., google internal MR, or MapR vs hadoop)

Our OSS project supports multiple compilers in CI testing, and treats selected classes of warnings as errors. Works well.
