Many learners report being frustrated that they can't understand things they "should be able to understand". These sorts of expectations are arbitrary and unhelpful. If you don't understand something, then your current level isn't enough to understand it. Bottom line.

A good strategy is just to take screenshots of things you want to know or add to Anki and doing it later. You'll eventually get there if you stick with it and making gaming in the target language more enjoyable in the short term is much more important.

In this video, I go in-depth on exactly why memorizing words and studying grammar isn't enough to become able to actually understand spoken language. Hope you guys find it useful!https://youtu.be/_LIz-Wbt4us

If you're ever immersing and feel like, "how is it actually possible to understand this", just try immersing for another 1,000 hours

The true value of using a monolingual dictionary isn't "learning what words really mean". It's avoiding false associations between your L1 and L2 that unconsciously bias the way you interpret the meaning of words.

Only being able to pick out sounds if it's a word you already know is actually a bad thing.

Attaining a new language is nothing less than creating all of the same impressions and associations in your mind as your experience from growing up in your own language. A classroom cannot provide this.

Language exchange is not useful unless you're already at the stage where you can talk. This stage is not when you're still learning grammar or cannot watch tv comfortably.

A new word is not an on/off switch, it is a new experience bar or a rechargable battery. The bar fills the more you encounter that word, and slowly empties the bigger the gap between you seeing it again. If it gets to a certain level you will naturally use it yourself.

Being good at something is a choice Being good at something means being bad at other things Having no shortcomings means having no strengths Choosing one happiness means rejecting another Those who do not choose something gain no happiness

Some people assume being able to understand a second language means translating it to your native language in your head. This is false. Knowing a language means you understand it before translation.

You can always know how well you're doing when you're consuming native material, yet this seems to be what learners hate most about immersion.

The true speech test isn't whether or not a language exchange student will speak with you. It's whether a random native of that language will.

Immersion is the real start of language learning. Everything else is build up. Do not get lost in the build up.

Immersion + SRS = comprehension ability. Immersion + comprehension ability = output ability. Output ability + practice = output mastery.

If you want to build a new skill I can not stress enough how important building the habit of doing it every day is Even if only half an hour Lately I'm thinking this quite a lot Even if you think you have no time, something is better than nothing, and the habit keeps you going

I can't speak for everyone, but for me, in hindsight, the journey of learning Japanese was much more meaningful and valuable than the result. If you don't enjoy the process, I highly recommend quitting.
