USS Porter is named after Commodore David Porter and son, Adm. David Dixon Porter. David Porter was 1st US ambassador to Turkey & died 1843 in Ankara. Had fought in the 1801-05 Barbary War (Tripoli) against a nominally Ottoman province. Dixon Porter was Superintendent of USNA.
