Today is the Emperor Hadrian's birthday🎈 Did you know that the Sixth Legion were based in #York after they'd built the eastern portion of Hadrian's Wall? They are also thought to have rebuilt the Eboracum fortress walls including the #Roman phases of the Multangular Tower!
Multangular tower sat in York Museum Gardens, surrounded by grass and blue sky.

Yesterday we had a visit from Dr. Melanie Giles, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at and one of her students, Isobel Harvey. 🔎 They came to look at, measure, and photograph the only three surviving objects from the discovery of the Grewelthorpe Moor bog body. 🧵👇
Roman remains including a sole of a hobnailed leather shoe, a textile insole with signs of ancient repair, and a textile fragment from a stocking.

This object shows us the vibrant colours used in #Medieval England! This 13th century silver mount is decorated with coloured glass & wire in a palette of rich colours. An artist with great skill must have made it. To most people the detail would not even be noticeable!

We interrupt your Tuesday scrolling with some bling These torcs may have belonged to an extremely wealthy, possibly royal, member of the Brigantes tribe, who ruled most of North Yorkshire during the #IronAge. One is dated to 100BC-70BC, while the other could be older still!

Wishing all our followers a #HappyNewYear! 🎆 Let's celebrate #medieval style! These C14th-C15th bowls were passed around groups & the more they drank the more the animals would emerge from the wine! Swimming stags are centrepiece of the right bowl & we think a pig in the left?

❄️ It's the #wintersolstice - the shortest day of the year! On our #Roman mosaic floor, the images represented are of the four seasons. The human figures each have a picture next to them representing an aspect of their season - for winter it is a bare branch 🌿

Have you heard of a vervel before? 🤔 It's the technical name for a ring worn by a hawk when used for hunting. This example is silver, dates to AD 1550-1700, and bears a small shield-shaped panel depicting a horse’s head. Gather round for story time!🧵👇

To mark the 200 year anniversary of the foundation of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, we have a new display! In 1828 the society was given the site of St Mary’s Abbey & built our museum in 1830. It showcases some of the 1st objects donated to our collection between 1822-24.

This analysis will hopefully tell us about their metal composition & how they were made. pXRF is non-destructive & works by firing X-rays at an object & measuring the fluorescent X-rays that bounce back, which differ depending on the elements that are in the surface material!

Hanging bowls are a distinctive object, dating from the end of #Roman rule in Britain to the 7th century. They're exciting finds as they're not common & it's not known exactly how they were used. Theories including use as lamps, for containing wine, or for holding holy water.
