GM is mostly use for platformers and topdows, why don't we see many other genres made with this engine? Do you intend to change that?

I don't think that's really for us to change. GM has the capabilities to create anything!! It's up to the devs what they make :)

How to go from just copying tutorials to your first independent game

i know i'm not yoyogames but what i can say is read the documentation, and understand the tutorial. your first time you might not have 100% retention, but a good rule of thumb is watch it multiple times until you thoroughly understand the code and can explain it to someone else
