A part of this may be journalists not being as keen to pursue negative stories about popular figures. There are likely other factors too, such as more sources being willing to dish on politicians when they are down. But whatever the causes, this dynamic is very unhealthy.

Both lionization and demonization involve preference and knowledge falsification. Exaggerations don’t get corrected because observers fear the consequences of being out of step.

The need to lionize or demonize public figures as opposed to seeing them as complex people with shades of grey says more about a collective need to order the world through moral figurines than about these actual figures.

More of a national news issue. People following state reporters are at least somewhat informed. Still, getting the bigger stories can't happen until people aren't afraid to talk.
