Yascha Mounk Retweeted New York Times Opinion

In nearly every country, authoritarian populists managed to subvert electoral systems by stacking the electoral commission with loyalists—except here. America's diversity of electoral rules breeds chaos and complexity. It is also the best defense against authoritarian takeover.https://twitter.com/nytopinion/status/1324336187671220224 …

This article is a great example of a progressive pundit fantasy which is also a constant feature of debates about free speech: Describe systemic evils that supposedly define America. Then design rules to combat them under the assumption that The Good will always be in charge.

My suggested solution has always been to pass a simple Constitutional Amendment that only allows for the exampsion of voting rights, while explicitly prohibiting anything that could further restrict voting rights from where they are at any given moment.

It’s not that the authoritarians in the US haven’t taken hold of election commissions to corrupt them against their purpose, it’s that they have done it at the state level, while rendering the FEC and DOJ incapable of doing anything about that.

Right now the good has to win by 4mil votes in hopes of a squeaker election win. Something’s not right. I’m open to anything but this ain’t it. It should embarrass us all that our “great” country can’t run an election in the 21st century. #Election2020

Come on, the article’s talking about a nationwide version of what the former Jim Crow states had to deal with under the voting rights act, before it was partially struck down. The VRA was not subverted by authoritarians—they just spent decades trying to kill it.

Also he ignores how many states have electoral boards, both local and statewide, that have express partisan majorities and were designed as such.

The diversity of electoral authorities and systems also makes it harder for hostile foreign nations to hack electoral results.

the problem with the article is that its basic premise is clearly incorrect. The Electoral College clearly helped Trump gain power and his only (now likely very distant) shot of keeping it
