"Christianity is bullshit, but it gave us human rights and Western values." Christianity didn't give us 'Western values.' Greek and other philosophers discussed ethics in greater detail. Christianity was a step backwards. The Enlightenment gave us these values, not the bible.

The "positive" messages in religious texts are part of the problem. They are a cover for all the bullshit that comes with religion. They are useless and simplistic relative to what thinkers discussed before them, yet they've convinced many that they have introduced these values.

Yes, I agree that’s a problem. They didn’t introduce the values. They existed before religions and will continue to exist after they’re gone.

The point is Yasmine, if you look at all the "good things" in religion, they all existed prior to and outside of religion. Religion co-opted the "good things" as a cover for all the bad shit.

No, I get that. My point is when ppl say Western civilization was borne from Christian values..it doesn’t bother me like it bothers some. Religious values, pagan values, philosophy, science, etc all led to the enlightenment values...you know what I mean? It’s just human progress.

And the good stuff came from human progress-that’s where credit is due. Not to any deities. I find the only issue w giving credit to religion is if ppl are saying WE didn’t come up w it-a higher power did. No. We did. Whether we came up w it in philosophy or religion.

And there is no “good stuff” that didn’t already exist. Confucius had the “do unto others” idea 500 yrs before Jesus. Let’s support good ideas and do away with the supernatural.

Ancient Egypt papyrus, 664 BC: "That which you hate to be done to you, do not do to others." The Golden Rule didnt originate from the Bible at all.
