Yes, it’s important to acknowledge the diff between apostates in the West vs Islamic world As difficult as it was for me, once I got away from my family, I was free There’s more-sometimes impenetrable-barriers to freedom if you’re in the Muslim world, esp Saudi, esp women in Saudi! https://twitter.com/manura_8/status/984116130842161155 …

I am in a similar situation and I am curious.. did you manage to preserve relations with your family? Despite what mine thinks, it is not easy for me that I might one day have to be cut off from all of them just because I dared question their beliefs.

Be proud that you dared question their beliefs. I have used this photo so many times. It's so true. Not as radical sounding, but my Catholic mother in the 50s/60s had to wear a veil to church..or else verbally & brow beaten by priest. Men and their righteous laws/regulations.....pic.twitter.com/c5wp5uo0su

I am a Muslim girl in a country that claims to be 100% Muslim - I use the word ‘claim’ because a significant portion of the youth are now irreligious, but the older generations/ the conservative majority prefer to ignore this and shut down our rights.

Two of the most vocal secularists this country has seen are now gone; one of them stabbed to death 17 times, the other one abducted and never heard of. I have been forced into the veil by my family, and have nearly gotten ostacarised once because I voiced out my feminist views.

I am proud to have questioned, but it is hard to stay positive about a future.

Btw, when I said ‘I am a Muslim girl’ I meant, I am supposed to be one.

Which country are you in? Maldives? And no, sadly, I have no relationship w my family. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that will be the case for you.

Yes, Maldives. Paradise for tourists, a backward society that ignores human rights for citizens. Whats funny is that most Maldivians would easily tell you that we are a ‘moderate’ country but will not tolerate any other belief I hope so but I doubt they’ll keep in contact w me
