Thanks - I would say the principle requires balancing between competing values. The measures taken were a balance of those values required to attain a legitimate goal and safeguard the border and the costs of the terrorists that attacked the border.

That's not how the principle works. 750 shot with live fire versus 2 Hamas members who fired on Israelis. You can slur them all as terrorists, racist but cliche in Israeli discourse, but where is you proof Israeli soldiers were under lethal threat from tires or stones?

So if your a Gazan and don't want to get shot because the IDF said they would shoot people attempting to penetrate or damage the border what would you do? My guess you would stay at a safe distance.

Peter, of those shot, were they shot with rubber bullets or live rounds? Seems low fatalities with so many shot and injured.

Not clear from the information I have. In any case, even those shot with live fire were mostly in the lower extremities. My experience suggests that in these type of events the military is doing it's best to limit fatalities.

If they actually wanted to limit fatalities they wouldn't have used live fire for crowd control. Let alone shot 750 people. But I see this is a spin zone for bad Israeli policies.
