South Yemen was a Soviet satellite state. The USSR absolutely wanted influence in the Peninsula. The Us supported the KSA and their goals so long as they would oppose the USSRhttps://twitter.com/ConfessionsExMu/status/979381133941985280 …
Totally get that. But why did so much funding go West then? How is that solving the problem?

-
it did because in the same way the US needed the saudis to oppose The soviets in the peninsula, the Saudis in turn need to acquiesce to the wahhabi whims to remain in power themselves. at the time the US wasnt aware of how big a political scourge wahhabism could be
-
the wahhabi funding of mosques in the west as overseen by the US support for KSA isnt a "strategy" beyond appeasing wahhabis and maintaining Saudi rule over arabia.

The Sunnis have allied w the US, so the Shias have allied w Russia, naturally. That explains the Russian influence in Yemen.

afaik the russian alliance w/ yemen was as a result of the communists in yemen opposing the british control of the port of Aden. it wasnt a consequence of sunni-shia relations. The religious divide may have in turn influenced the saudis to oppose them though
