I completely agree that they used that strategy in Afghanistan. The idea that they’d encourage export of Wahabi ideology across the planet to protect against Russian invasion of Islamic countries makes no sense.

It was a deal between the House of Saudi and the conservative ulema, when the siege was ongoing. The ulema sanctioned the use of violence inside the mosque and in return asked a big chunk of petrol dollars to be invested to spread their version of Islam.
Islam is a religion of conquest. Look where Islam spread (via the sword) in its 1st hundred yrs. This is a 1400 yr old & continuing problem. The spread of fundamentalist Islam isn’t caused by the US Culpability of the West is allowing it into their countries on a massive scale.
