I have just had the discussion about extremism with a nice Muslim lady in Pakistan, and her understanding of extremists is they they misinterpret scripture and tailor it towards a political end. That is, "regular" Muslims attempt a literal interpretation, extremists distort.

Yes, that’s the common cop-out. And it’s not true, obviously. That woman (and millions of other Muslims) is not aware of what her religion actually teaches. But this narrative helps her to both be Muslim and sleep at night.

She seems more aware that most I've discussed with (Imams don't want to talk to me :-). I think the problem is that, even after the Almighty himself took the time to dictate the ultimate book of laws, the doctrine is still so vague and confusing that tons of hadith had to....

... be written by mere mortals to try to clarify it. They of course were so all over the place that several schools of thoughts and sects have just added to the confusion. That Muslims now have a hard time pinpointing exactly what Allah's message is, is understandable. Thoughts?

This, again, is common w ppl who don’t understand Arabic (about 85% of Muslims), so they rely on different ppl to give them different translations/interpretations. Those of us that can read the literal word of Allah have no trouble understanding his message.
