In general, there are waaay more Shias leaving Islam than Sunnis. Shias only make up about 10% of Muslims, whereas Sunnis make up about 90%. It’s harder for ppl raised like me to leave because Sunnis are less amenable (and by that I mean staunchly opposed) to critical thought /1
Shias respect their Imams (humans alive today that make judgements based on our current world) whereas Sunnis only respect Mohammed and only refer to his teachings (which, of course, are 1400 yrs old and unchanging). So the wiggle room for thinking is more possible w Shias /2
And #Iranians are leaving in droves because they’re experiencing ‘true Islam’ under Sharia, but they see it as an Arab invasion of their Persian ancestry whereas (Sunni) Arabs in Saudi, for example, are proud of Islam... /3
Shia Saudis, however, are a minority and treated badly, so that motivates them to question their second-class state. Sunni Muslims are fed a daily diet of supremacy ‘youre so lucky to be Muslim AND Arab, youre among the best, chosen, ppl etc’ so they’re less likely to question /4
It’s kind of sad/hilarious to see Saudi women so incredibly subjugated yet they will insist that they are Queens because they are told that. North Korea level brainwashing. They believe the propaganda vs looking objectively at their life. #NotAll, of course /4

This research is in the US, where (because there is access to differing narratives) ppl are more likely to leave, but there is a definite shift in the Islamic world too-ppl there just have to be quieter, of course, as the price for speaking up could be death. /7
