Reformation and secularism are not mutually exclusive. You can be BOTH.
@MaajidNawaz supports reform and is a secularist.

Indeed. Rouhani is an Islamist, not a secularist. There is no reforming Islamism. It must be intellectually terminated. Alongside that, even in secular contexts, Islam today needs reform. There is no contradiction here & no need to desperately scramble to find one.

Melissa, they are mutually exclusive. We are talking about a Reformist Islam government -that’s in coming late opposition to Secularism. Maajid does not advocate for that.

It’s not a “reformist Islam government”. It’s an Islamist theocracy. Islam in government is Islamism by definition&diametrically opposed to secularism. There is no room for compromise in the principle of secularism. Whereas reforming Islam must continue even in a secular context

That’s how you define it. That’s not how the Iranian Reformists are defining it. This is one of the major issues w Islamic reform in general. It means different things to different ppl.

No, that’s how Iranian reform Islamists are defining it. There are also Iranian reform secular clerics who’ve existed pre ‘79 Islamist revolution & still exist in Iran & Iraq. Problem is most don’t know the history of development of Islamism vs Islam.

I know they’re Islamists. Of course they are. If they want to govern, then by definition they’re Islamists. Let’s agree on that. New point: He calls himself a Reformist AND he wants to govern. Those two things ARE in direct contradiction as opposed to Michelle’s original comment

Yes, we agree. But I suspect Melissa was addressing the obvious ambiguity left open by Armin’s wording, which he would’ve predicted would occur, but let slide anyway.

Yes, we agree. But, to clarify Melissa was responding to @halatoon not @ArminNavabi —and I thought her tweet was pretty clear.
But anyway, hope you have a fun night tonight ushering in 2018!pic.twitter.com/aBoJiZLvPI
