The worst atrocities were carried out in the name of change. Take islam, communism or nazism for example - the three worst social cancers in human history - all three abruptly discontinued with the old ways. While all three became reactionary over time, they started as a change.

A huge part of entrenched animal cruelty occuring globally - from farming for meat, eggs and dairy, to horse racing/jump racing to animal circuses, to rodeos - gets excused in this way. Tradition and convenience are not moral justifications imo.
