I think the element that makes Islam so successful, in the Arab world at least, is that it isn’t a reading culture. There’s no bedtime stories, no trips to the local public library-love of reading isn’t instilled in children (#NotAll). They’re encouraged to read just one book /1

The good thing is-this is easily reversible. Read to your kids every night. Make it a special/fun time and theyll grow to love reading. Fill their bookshelves. Take them to the library weekly (if there are public libraries where you live)

I think this is half true; I was raised in a religious family; we were being told bedtime stories daily, we had a library home and at school (and continuously encouraged to read as possible) the idea is: all this was about islam and quran. Brainwashing at its finest

Yes. Sounds like my upbringing. Only religious books. Where did you grow up? Were there public libraries there? Some Arab homes encourage reading, but it’s not a societal norm. For ex, no public libraries.

I had Dr. Seuss and The Hardy Boys at home, Jack London at the primary school library. Then, in order, Burroughs, (Tarzan, Barsoom), Norman, Zelazny, Bradbury, Asimov, Clarke, Ellison, Sturgeon. (This was in my teens.) Zelazny's Lord of Light! Sturgeon's Slow Sculpture!

I am from a Hindu majority country. I think muslim here influence by Hindu culture that's why I think your story of Islamic success don't fit here. But may be some Muslims who go to madarasses(Islamic school) may follow the routine you explained.

I lived in the Gulf for a while. At only one house did I ever see a bookshelf but I never went beyond the majlis. I noticed that no-one ever had a book in public, only a phone.
