I see defending the right to wear niqab, regardless of safety concerns, =defending FGM or child marriage.

It's the same 'logic' that left me in an abusive home. The judge felt he couldn't tell ppl how to raise their children. It's culture.
And the argument is moot anyway because niqab is NOT ISLAMIC. It's like saying the KKK hood is Christian.

I think there's a hadith which says women covered their faces after Allah decreed they should cover.

Don't agree on that. There are hadith on the matter that say when ayat of surah noor was revealed women immediately covered their faces
