That’s the best way to think of religion, in my opinion.

But unfortunately, most of them take their faith seriously and believe they'll go to hell if they don't believe in all the things listed in my pinned thread.

And, unfortunately, Sharia in govt prevents ppl like Reza from living their best life. He can be whoever he wants to be because he’s not living in a Muslim majority country that dictates his actions and ability to think freely etc. He has nonMuslims to thank for his freedom.

Isn’t that the fault of the individuals in the government and not Islam?

The individuals in the government are following Sharia. They didn’t invent these laws. They are following the laws of the religion.

Except for the fact that there is no one definitive version of Sharia as it is based on interpretation

Sharia comes from Quran and Hadith. Scholars and Sharia experts spend their lives studying the scriptures before it is codified into law. Are you suggesting they’re all wrong? That you and Reza have a better understanding of Islam? That’s quite an arrogant assertion.

I have two degrees studying Islam. One reason Sharia varies is because not all Muslims use the same Hadith, creating different laws. The Sharia of the Iranian government is much different than the Sharia of my local, progressive Imam.

you’ve “sTuDiEd IsLaM” in the west, you’ve studied the watered down version of it, the unicorn version, you know fuck all about what any of us born-muslims go through, if you had truly studied islam you wouldn’t have been defending it, Emma.

as if the west would ever allow true islam to be taught as a major, she’s studied the western unicorn and rainbows islam and she thinks she’s reached some kind of higher level of knowledge than us now, i’d pay her to go get two degrees in her islamic studies in iran or saudi

I’d pay her just to go repeat elementary school in Riyadh. From my experience, the first few beatings for not memorizing surah’s correctly provide an important foundation for future knowledge to be built upon
