Not just cults. As you note, major religions act the same way. Catholicism still uses excommunication, as do the Mormons. JWs, the Amish, and Mennonites 'shun' people that don't fit their value systems. It's basic tribal delineation of in-group vs. out-group.

But yeah, the dogmatism of regressive left is frightening. I see parallels to Soviet Union, mainly because it lacks the supernatural creator, but has everything else dogmatic. /end
